AED Introductions

  • What is an AED?

An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias of ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in a patient, and is able to treat them through defibrillation, the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.

With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use for the layperson, and the use of AEDs is taught in many first aid, certified first responder, and basic life support (BLS) level cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) classes.

  • Which AED do we recommend?

A quick search on Google or a visit to any standard online defibrillator shop will prove that there is a plethora of AEDs available for you to choose from. But which ones are reliable? Should I be concerned with IP rating or FDA approval? Do I need to understand Joules, and device variations therein, to influence my purchase? Do I need a fully or semi automated defibrillator? Which ones come with assisted CPR? If I get an AED without assisted CPR – do I then need more training to use it? The list of initial questions you may have asked yourself could go on… and on.

Our best-in-class advice makes it easy for you – We only supply AEDs that the BHF, Resuscitation Council and Emergency Services approve/use:

  • Why do we only recommend and supply these models?

Allow us to answer this question, with a question:  When there are clearly so many choices, with a wide pricing range, why aren’t BHF, the Resuscitation Council, or our Emergency Services leaning toward the cheapest, most easy to source, AEDs? Because not every AED is as proven and reliable as any other, nor are they all successful at providing defibrillation with a survival outcome.

  • What are the differences between the AEDs we supply?

    • Visual/Audible CPR assistance
    • Output escalation
    • Capacity min/max output
    • Industry design/robustness
    • Aesthetics
